Fishing + Cooking: How Two Professions Double Your WoW Gold

Most profession combinations in WoW are additive — you get the benefits of two professions side by side. Fishing and Cooking are multiplicative. The fish you catch become the reagents for the food you cook, and cooked food sells for two to five times the raw fish price because you are saving raiders the effort of sourcing and cooking their own consumables. One profession feeds directly into the other, and together they generate more gold than either would independently.

The core math: If raw fish sells for 20g per unit and a cooked feast or stat food sells for 60g, your cooking transforms 20g of raw materials into 60g of finished product in under a second. That markup is your cooking premium.

Why This Combination Works

The Fishing + Cooking synergy exists because of a structural inefficiency in the WoW economy. Most raiders do not have max Cooking. Many do not have max Fishing. They need food buffs for raids but cannot or do not want to make them. They buy finished food from the Auction House at whatever price it takes to get it.

You, as someone with both professions maxed, capture the entire value chain: you catch the fish at zero raw material cost (just your time) and cook it into finished raid consumables that sell at a significant premium. No materials to buy, no competition from raw ingredient sellers, just a direct line from fishing pole to Auction House profit.

The Synergy by Version

Classic Era

FishCooked ProductCooking BuffValue Multiplier
Oily BlackmouthSell raw (alchemy use)1x (sell raw)
Nightfin SnapperNightfin Soup8 MP5 for 10 min2–3x
Stonescale EelSell raw (alchemy)1x (sell raw)
Raw Spotted YellowtailGrilled Squid+10 Agility for 10 min3–5x

In Classic, some fish are worth more raw (alchemy ingredients) and some are worth more cooked (stat foods). Knowing which is which is key. Nightfin Soup and Grilled Squid for physical DPS are almost always worth cooking.

TBC Classic

TBC's cooking is where the synergy really comes into its own. Fisherman's Feast, Grilled Mudfish, and Spicy Hot Talbuk are all major demand items for TBC raiders, and the majority of reagents are fish or food that pairs with fish-caught items.

Wrath Classic

Wrath introduced the best version of the synergy. Dragonfin Angelfish cooks into Blackened Dragonfin (best Agility food for physical DPS). Glacial Salmon cooks into Firecracker Salmon (best Spell Power food for casters). The Fish Feast provides a mixed buff and serves as a raid feast. Every major Wrath raider food ties back to a specific fish.

Wrath tip: Cook Fish Feasts instead of individual stat foods when supply is high. Fish Feasts sell for more per-fish equivalent than individual cooked fish, and the recipe is account-wide once learned. Stack size: sell in stacks of 5 at Tuesday evening for maximum visibility on raid nights.

Cata Classic

Cataclysm's cooking overhaul introduced Cooking specializations and the Seafood Magnifique Feast — a raid feast requiring Fathom Eel. The feast sells for substantial gold and the recipe requires Guild Cooking achievements, creating a natural supply barrier. If you or your guild has the recipe, cooked feasts are your highest-value output.

Cooking Skill Leveling Path

You do not need to spend gold buying cooking materials. Fish your way to max cooking by catching and cooking everything:

  • 1–50: Charred Wolf Meat / Roasted Kodo Meat (bought from vendor cheaply) or any fish recipe
  • 50–150: Loch Frenzy Delight (Loch Modan fish) or Bristle Whisker Catfish recipes
  • 150–225: Curiously Tasty Omelet or Mithril Head Trout dishes
  • 225–300: Nightfin Soup or Grilled Squid — both use fish you can catch in Feralas
  • 300+: Your expansion's primary cooking progression recipes, all using fish you are already farming

The 5 minutes to cook your catch is the best return on time investment available anywhere in WoW. You are multiplying your session value by 2-5x for five minutes of clicking.
