Every Sunday afternoon, the coast of Stranglethorn Vale transforms into a battleground — not of swords and spells, but of fishing poles and bobbers. The Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza is World of Warcraft's longest-running competitive event and one of the most thrilling experiences in the game. Whether you want the exclusive rewards, the Master Angler achievement, or just the bragging rights, this guide will give you the best possible shot at winning.
How the Event Works
At exactly 2:00 PM server time on Sunday, schools of Speckled Tastyfish begin spawning along the entire coast of Stranglethorn Vale. Your goal is to catch 40 Speckled Tastyfish as fast as possible, then race to Booty Bay and turn them in to Riggle Bassbait before anyone else does.
The Rules
- Tastyfish pools only spawn along the Stranglethorn coastline (not inland, not on islands)
- Each pool yields 3-5 Tastyfish before despawning
- You need exactly 40 Tastyfish to turn in
- First place gets to choose between two exclusive rewards
- Second and third place get a consolation prize
- The event lasts until 4:00 PM, but the NPC stays until 5:00 PM for turn-ins
Preparation: Before the Event
Set Your Hearthstone
This is the most important preparation step. Set your Hearthstone to the Booty Bay inn the day before the event. When you hit 40 Tastyfish, you want to Hearthstone directly to the turn-in NPC instead of running or flying. This saves 2-5 minutes that could be the difference between winning and losing.
Maximize Your Fishing Skill
Higher fishing skill means fewer failed catches. Every failed catch wastes 15-30 seconds you cannot afford in a timed competition. Prepare by:
- Equipping your best fishing pole (Arcanite Rod, Jeweled Pole, etc.)
- Stocking up on Aquadynamic Fish Attractors (+100 fishing) or your best available lures
- Applying a lure right at 1:59 PM so it is active the moment pools spawn
- Wearing any fishing skill gear (Lucky Fishing Hat, boot enchant)
Scout the Coastline
Before the event, fly along the Stranglethorn coast to familiarize yourself with pool spawn points. Pools spawn in fixed locations, so knowing where to look saves precious seconds per pool. Pay attention to:
- Clusters of spawn points where multiple pools appear close together
- Areas near aggressive mobs that might slow you down
- Quick access points between the beach and the road for faster movement
Choose Your Starting Position
Where you start fishing matters. The coast is divided into rough sections:
| Section | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Northern coast (near Grom'gol) | Fewer players, less competition | Farther from Booty Bay for turn-in |
| Central coast | Good pool density | Most competitive area |
| Southern coast (near Booty Bay) | Quick turn-in if no Hearthstone | Very crowded, high competition |
| Southeast coast | Fewer hostile mobs | Popular with experienced contestants |
During the Event: Winning Strategy
The Pool-Hopping Technique
The fastest approach is pool-hopping: fish a pool until it despawns (3-5 catches), then immediately move to the next nearest pool. Do not waste time fishing in open water — only fish from Tastyfish pools.
- Start at your chosen position before 2:00 PM
- The moment pools appear, cast into the nearest one
- After each pool despawns, mount up and ride to the next visible pool
- Use Find Fish if available to spot pools on your minimap
- Keep moving — never wait for a pool to respawn at a location
Speed Tips
- Use a fast mount — Every second between pools matters. Epic mount speed is significantly better than regular.
- Stay near the water's edge — Pools spawn right along the coastline. Do not wander inland.
- Skip contested pools — If another player is already fishing a pool, move to the next one. Sharing a pool halves your catch rate.
- Do not fight mobs — If an aggressive mob attacks you, run through it to the next pool. Combat slows you down more than taking a few hits.
- Count your fish — Keep a mental count. At 38-39, start planning your turn-in. At 40, Hearthstone immediately.
PvP Server Survival
On PvP servers, the Extravaganza is a warzone. Enemy players will gank you to reduce competition. Survival tips:
- Bring friends to guard you while you fish
- Fish in areas with fewer opposite-faction players
- Use class abilities (stealth, invisibility, bubble) to avoid confrontations
- Accept that you may be killed and have a plan to quickly resurrect and resume
- Consider the northern coast where PvP encounters are less frequent
The Turn-In
When you hit 40 Tastyfish:
- Immediately use your Hearthstone to Booty Bay
- Run to Riggle Bassbait (he is on the dock near the Booty Bay fishing area)
- Turn in the quest
- Choose your reward
If your Hearthstone is on cooldown, you need a backup plan: a mage portal, a warlock summon, or a fast flight. Pre-arrange one of these with a friend before the event.
Rewards
First Place Rewards (Choose One)
| Reward | Details | Why Choose It |
|---|---|---|
| Arcanite Fishing Rod | +35 Fishing skill | Best fishing pole in Classic WoW. Required for max fishing skill (Alliance). |
| Hook of the Master Angler | Trinket: Transform into a fish, underwater breathing, +swim speed | Unique ability, fun and useful for underwater content. |
Second and Third Place
Runners-up receive Nat Pagle's Extreme Angler FC-5000, a fishing pole with +25 fishing skill. Still a solid pole, though not as powerful as the Arcanite Rod.
Consolation Rewards
Even if you do not win, the Tastyfish you caught can be cooked into Spiced Tastyfish, a decent healing food. You can also turn in rare fish caught during the event for additional prizes:
- Keefer's Angelfish — Turn in for a Lucky Fishing Hat (+5 fishing)
- Brownell's Blue Striped Racer — Turn in for Nat Pagle's Extreme Angler FC-5000
- Dezian Queenfish — Turn in for a High Test Eternium Fishing Line (+5 fishing to pole)
How Many Attempts Will It Take?
Be realistic about your expectations. On high-population servers, the contest is often won in under 30 minutes by experienced players. It may take many weeks of attempts before you win. Factors that affect your chances:
- Server population — Low population servers have less competition
- Time of year — Summer holidays and expansion launches bring more contestants
- Your fishing skill — Higher skill means fewer wasted casts
- Route knowledge — Knowing pool spawn locations improves with each attempt
"The Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza is the only event in WoW where a fishing pole is mightier than a sword. Every angler should experience the thrill of racing to catch 40 Tastyfish at least once."
Win or lose, the Extravaganza is one of the most unique events in World of Warcraft. The rewards are exclusive, the competition is real, and the satisfaction of winning is unlike anything else in the game. Set your Hearthstone, stock your lures, and may the best angler win.
