Fishing in World of Warcraft is one of the most accessible professions in the game, yet many players never try it. Whether you want to make gold, collect rare mounts and pets, cook powerful raid buff food, or simply enjoy a relaxing break from combat, fishing has something for everyone. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to get started.
Getting Started: Your First Cast
Step 1: Find a Fishing Trainer
Every major city in World of Warcraft has a fishing trainer. Look for them near bodies of water — docks, canals, lakes, and ponds. You can also ask a city guard for directions by selecting the Profession Trainers option.
Popular trainer locations include:
- Alliance: Stormwind (Canal District), Ironforge (The Forlorn Cavern), Darnassus
- Horde: Orgrimmar (Valley of Honor), Thunder Bluff, Undercity
- Neutral: Booty Bay, Dalaran, Shattrath
Step 2: Buy a Fishing Pole
You need a fishing pole equipped in order to cast your line. Basic fishing poles can be purchased from trade goods vendors or fishing suppliers near trainers for just a few copper. Later on you will find upgraded poles with fishing skill bonuses, but the basic pole is all you need to start.
Step 3: Cast Your Line
With your fishing pole equipped, find any body of water and use your Fishing ability (it appears in your professions tab). Your character will cast a line into the water and a bobber will appear on the surface. Watch the bobber carefully — when it splashes and dips beneath the surface, right-click it to reel in your catch.
Understanding Fishing Skill
Your fishing skill increases as you catch fish. In Retail WoW, fishing skill is tied to each expansion's zone rather than a single global number. In Classic WoW, you have one fishing skill that goes from 1 to 300 (or higher in later expansions).
Retail WoW Fishing
In modern Retail WoW, each expansion has its own fishing skill track. You can fish in any expansion's zones regardless of your skill level — you will just catch more grey junk items at lower skill levels. As your skill improves in that expansion, your catch quality improves and you start landing the valuable fish.
Classic WoW Fishing
Classic WoW is stricter. Each zone has a minimum fishing skill requirement, and fishing in water above your skill level results in "Your fish got away" messages. You need to level your skill progressively through appropriate zones and visit trainers at skill 75, 150, and 225 to unlock higher tiers.
| Fishing Tier | Skill Range | Where to Train |
|---|---|---|
| Apprentice | 1-75 | Any capital city trainer |
| Journeyman | 75-150 | Any capital city trainer |
| Expert | 150-225 | Old Man Heming, Booty Bay (book) |
| Artisan | 225-300 | Nat Pagle, Dustwallow Marsh (quest) |
Pools vs. Open Water
You will notice two types of fishing spots in WoW:
Open Water
Casting into any body of water without targeting a specific spot is open-water fishing. You will catch a random selection of fish available in that zone, along with some junk items (especially at lower skill levels). Open-water fishing is simple and works anywhere.
Fishing Pools
Fishing pools are the circular, swirling patches of water that spawn at specific locations along coastlines and rivers. These pools contain specific fish types and are much more profitable than open water fishing. When you cast into a pool, you are guaranteed to catch whatever that pool contains — no junk.
Lures: Boosting Your Fishing Skill
Lures are temporary consumable items that attach to your fishing pole and increase your effective fishing skill for a set duration. Higher fishing skill means fewer failed catches and access to higher-level fish.
| Lure | Fishing Bonus | Duration | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shiny Bauble | +25 | 10 minutes | Trade vendors |
| Nightcrawlers | +50 | 10 minutes | Trade vendors |
| Aquadynamic Fish Attractor | +100 | 10 minutes | Engineering / Auction House |
| Bright Baubles | +75 | 10 minutes | Trade vendors |
To use a lure, simply right-click it in your inventory while you have your fishing pole equipped. The lure will be applied automatically and you will see a temporary buff appear.
The Find Fish Ability
One of the most useful fishing tools in the game is the Find Fish ability, which shows fishing pool locations on your minimap as yellow dots. This is invaluable for pool-hopping routes.
You get this ability from the Weather-Beaten Journal, which can be found inside fishing containers that drop from daily fishing quests or certain fishing pool catches. Once you learn it, Find Fish is available permanently on all your characters. In Retail WoW, it is learned automatically as you level your fishing skill.
What Can You Do with Fish?
Fish are not just vendor trash. Here is what makes fishing valuable:
- Cooking — Most fish can be cooked into food that provides stat buffs. Some buff foods are required for raiding and sell for high prices on the Auction House.
- Alchemy — Certain fish (like Oily Blackmouth, Firefin Snapper, and Stonescale Eel) are used in alchemy recipes for potions and flasks.
- Auction House sales — Raw fish, cooked food, and alchemy materials all sell consistently. Fishing is one of the most reliable gold-making methods in the game.
- Achievements — Dozens of fishing achievements exist, including the prestigious "Salty" title from the Accomplished Angler meta-achievement.
- Rare collectibles — You can fish up mounts (Sea Turtle, Great Sea Ray), battle pets (Giant Sewer Rat), and unique toys.
Essential Addons for Fishing
While not required, these addons make fishing more enjoyable:
- FishingBuddy — Tracks your catches, auto-equips your fishing pole, and provides useful fishing statistics.
- Rarity — Tracks your attempts at rare drops like the Sea Turtle mount and shows estimated drop rates.
- TradeSkillMaster (TSM) — Helps you price your fish on the Auction House and identify the most profitable catches on your server.
Common Beginner Mistakes to Avoid
- Vendoring valuable fish — Always check the Auction House price before selling fish to a vendor. Many fish are worth 10-100x more to other players.
- Ignoring pools — Open-water fishing is fine for leveling, but pools are where the real value is.
- Fishing without lures — Especially at low skill levels, lures significantly reduce failed catches and speed up your leveling.
- Skipping trainer visits (Classic) — In Classic WoW, you hit hard skill caps at 75, 150, and 225. Plan your trainer visits in advance.
- Not cooking your catches — Cooked fish almost always sells for more than raw fish. Level cooking alongside fishing for maximum profit.
"Fishing in WoW rewards patience and knowledge. The players who understand what to catch, where to catch it, and what to do with it will always out-earn those who cast randomly."
