WoW Fishing Macros: Automate Casts, Lures, and More

WoW macros cannot click the bobber for you — that would cross into automation the client does not allow. But they can do a surprising amount: auto-equip your fishing pole, apply lures on the same keypress as your cast, swap back to your main weapon after fishing, and chain abilities to minimize clicks per catch. A well-built macro stack makes every fishing session noticeably faster.

The Essential Fishing Macros

1. Cast + Apply Lure (One Button)

This macro equips your fishing lure on your pole if one is not already active, then casts your fishing line. You press one button before each cast and never have to manually apply lures again.

Replace Aquadynamic Fish Attractor with whichever lure you are using. The /use line applies the lure only if your pole has no active enchant — it does nothing while a lure is still active, so spamming the button is safe.

2. Equip Fishing Gear + Cast

This macro equips your full fishing set (pole and hat) before casting, then casts immediately. No more digging through bags.

Replace the item names with your actual fishing pole and hat names. The macro will attempt to equip both items before casting. Note: there is a brief global cooldown on item equips in some versions, so you may need to press the button twice on the first cast after switching specs.

3. Fish + Swap Back to Combat Gear

This is a two-step macro using the same button. First press casts fishing. Second press (after you have looted) swaps back to your main weapon. Useful if you frequently alternate between fishing and combat.

Hold Shift while pressing the button to swap back to your combat weapon. Without Shift, it casts fishing as normal.

4. Auto-Loot Fishing Catch

In Retail WoW, auto-loot is usually enabled by default. In Classic, this macro forces auto-loot regardless of your settings, useful if you prefer manual loot everywhere else but want quick fishing pickups.

Note: this permanently enables auto-loot in your client settings. Remove the second line if you only want it temporarily.

Advanced Macro Techniques

Targeting Macros for Pool Fishing

When pool fishing, you need to face the pool before casting. This macro includes a targeting helper that faces your character toward your current target, useful if you have the pool targeted on your nameplate:

Replace the pool name with your target school. This is more useful as a reference than a practical fishing macro — in most cases you simply click the pool manually.

What Macros Cannot Do

The macro system has hard limits. You cannot:

• Auto-click the bobber when it splashes (requires external input)
• Move your character automatically between pools
• Detect when a pool is fished out and find a new one
• Run fishing continuously while you are away from the keyboard

For everything beyond what macros can do, you need dedicated fishing automation software.

Combining Macros with FishBot

Macros and FishBot are complementary. Set up your gear-swap macro so your character is already in fishing mode when FishBot starts its session. Let FishBot handle the cast-wait-click loop, and use your gear-swap macro to exit fishing mode when the session ends. Together, you get a fully streamlined fishing workflow from start to finish.
