Most WoW players think of mounts as dungeon drops and raid rewards. But some of the rarest and most coveted collectibles in the game come from the most unlikely source — your fishing pole. Fishing mounts and pets are some of the rarest in the game precisely because most players never bother to fish for them. This guide covers every mount and pet you can obtain through fishing, along with the best strategies to farm each one.

Key takeaway: Fishing mounts have some of the lowest drop rates in the game (often below 0.1%), making them genuinely rare. The upside is that fishing for them requires zero gear, zero group, and zero skill beyond basic fishing. It is purely a patience game.

Fishable Mounts

Sea Turtle

DetailInfo
Mount TypeAquatic (increases swim speed by 60%)
Drop Rate~0.1% per catch from fishing pools
Where to FishAny fishing pool in Northrend, Cataclysm, or Pandaria zones
UsableOn land and in water (slow on land, fast in water)

The Sea Turtle is the original fishing mount and one of the most iconic rare drops in WoW. It has been in the game since Wrath of the Lich King and remains a coveted collectible. The key facts:

  • It only drops from pool fishing — open-water casts cannot yield the turtle
  • Any fishing pool in Northrend, Cataclysm, or Pandaria zones can drop it
  • The drop rate is approximately 1 in 1,000 catches (0.1%)
  • It is not a 100% usable flying mount — it is primarily a swimming mount that works on land at slow speed
Best farming strategy: Fish pools in Northrend zones like Borean Tundra or Sholazar Basin where pools are densely packed. Use Find Fish to spot pools on your minimap and hop between them efficiently. Expect roughly 5-15 hours of pool fishing before you see the turtle drop, though luck varies wildly.

Great Sea Ray

DetailInfo
Mount TypeAquatic (increases swim speed)
Drop Rate~0.02% per catch (extremely rare)
Where to FishAny open water in Kul Tiras or Zandalar (Battle for Azeroth)
UsableWater only

The Great Sea Ray is an aquatic-only mount that drops from open-water fishing in Battle for Azeroth zones. Unlike the Sea Turtle, this drops from open water rather than pools, making it even harder to specifically target. You simply cast and pray.

The drop rate is estimated at roughly 1 in 5,000 catches, making it one of the rarest fishing drops in the game. Most players who obtain it do so incidentally while fishing for other BfA materials.

Brinedeep Bottom-Feeder

DetailInfo
Mount TypeAquatic (underwater mount)
How to ObtainPurchase from Conjurer Margoss for 100 Drowned Mana
Where to FishMargoss's Retreat (floating island above Dalaran, Legion)
UsableUnderwater

Unlike the other fishing mounts, the Brinedeep Bottom-Feeder is not a random drop. You earn it through a reputation grind with Conjurer Margoss in Legion Dalaran. Fish in the pool at Margoss's Retreat to catch Drowned Mana, then trade 100 Drowned Mana to Margoss for the mount.

The grind takes roughly 3-5 hours of focused fishing. Each catch yields 1-3 Drowned Mana, and you need to reach Best Friend reputation with Margoss to unlock the purchase. Feed him Drowned Mana to increase your reputation.

Deepstar Aurelid

DetailInfo
Mount TypeJellyfish mount (aquatic)
How to ObtainFish up Strange Goop, craft bait, summon and defeat Hirukon
Where to FishZereth Mortis (Shadowlands)
Drop Rate100% from Hirukon

The Deepstar Aurelid (jellyfish mount) is obtained through a multi-step fishing quest chain in Zereth Mortis. The process involves:

  1. Fish in Zereth Mortis pools to catch Strange Goop (rare drop)
  2. Combine Strange Goop with other materials to craft Aurelid Lure
  3. Use the lure at a specific location to summon Hirukon (a world boss)
  4. Defeat Hirukon (can be soloed at max level) for a guaranteed mount drop
Good news: Unlike the other fishing mounts, the Deepstar Aurelid is guaranteed once you complete the quest chain. The fishing step (catching Strange Goop) is the time gate, but the mount itself is a 100% drop.

Fishable Battle Pets

Giant Sewer Rat

DetailInfo
Pet TypeCritter (battle pet)
Drop Rate~0.1% per catch
Where to FishDalaran Underbelly sewers (Northrend or Legion Dalaran)

The Giant Sewer Rat is one of the original fishing pets and remains a collector favorite. Fish in the Dalaran sewers (Underbelly) to have a chance at catching it. The drop rate is similar to the Sea Turtle — roughly 1 in 1,000 casts. The sewer water in Dalaran is the only place it drops.

Tip: Fish in Northrend Dalaran's Underbelly rather than Legion Dalaran. The original Northrend version has fewer distractions and the same drop rate. Park an alt there and fish whenever you have downtime.

Strand Crawler

DetailInfo
Pet TypeAquatic (battle pet)
How to ObtainRare reward from Dalaran daily fishing quest bag
WhereDalaran daily fishing quests (Northrend)

The Strand Crawler comes from the Bag of Fishing Treasures rewarded by the Dalaran daily fishing quests. Complete the daily quest each day and hope for the pet in your reward bag. The drop rate is low but improves over many days of completion.

Chuck, Snarly, Muckbreath, and Toothy

These four crocolisk battle pets are all obtained from the Shattrath (Outland) daily fishing quest reward bag. Each quest completion gives you a Bag of Fishing Treasures with a chance at one of these pets. They are considered a set and collectors want all four.

Other Notable Fishing Pets

  • Tiny Blue Carp — Fished from open water in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms (Pandaria). Extremely rare.
  • Tiny Green Carp — Fished from open water in Valley of the Four Winds (Pandaria).
  • Tiny Red Carp — Fished from open water in Townlong Steppes or Dread Wastes (Pandaria).
  • Tiny White Carp — Fished from open water in Kun-Lai Summit (Pandaria). Rarest of the four carps.
  • Sea Pony — Fished from the Darkmoon Island coastline during the Darkmoon Faire.

Tips for Farming Fishing Collectibles

  1. Use the Rarity addon — This addon tracks how many attempts you have made at each rare drop. It shows estimated drop rates and tracks your progress, which is invaluable for staying motivated during long grinds.
  2. Fish during downtime — Queue for a dungeon, wait for a raid group, or watch a show in the background. Fishing collectible farming is perfect for semi-AFK play.
  3. Target multiple collectibles at once — If you are fishing in Northrend pools for the Sea Turtle, you are also building Dalaran daily quest progress for the Strand Crawler and Giant Sewer Rat.
  4. Be patient with RNG — Some players catch the Sea Turtle in 50 casts. Others take 5,000. Do not get discouraged — every cast has the same probability.
  5. Check the Auction House — Some fishing pets are tradeable and may be cheaper to buy than to farm yourself. Compare the Auction House price against the time you would spend fishing.
The math: At a 0.1% drop rate, you have a 63% chance of seeing a drop within 1,000 casts, an 86% chance within 2,000 casts, and a 95% chance within 3,000 casts. If you average 120 casts per hour, that means roughly 8-25 hours for most fishing mount drops.

"There is something deeply satisfying about riding a mount that came from your fishing pole instead of a raid boss. Fishing mounts are proof that patience is its own kind of power."

Fishing collectibles represent some of the most unique items in all of World of Warcraft. They cannot be bought with gold (mounts at least), cannot be earned through combat, and require nothing but a pole and persistence. Start casting, track your attempts, and one day you will reel in something truly extraordinary.
